A Hotjar alternative that tells you what to fix
Hotjar gives you heatmaps and session replays, and you work out what they mean. Betterloop does the working out: one script tag picks up rage clicks, dead buttons, JS errors and slow pages, and you get back one ranked list of fixes, each with the evidence behind it.
First, what happened to Hotjar
Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. As of 31 October 2026, hotjar.com opens a Contentsquare page that says new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created, and new users sign up on Contentsquare instead. Hotjar's old free plan captured 35 sessions a day. Contentsquare's free plan lists 200,000 sessions a month with heatmaps, session replay, funnels, surveys and error monitoring.
So if you are looking for Hotjar today, the real choice is Contentsquare, or a tool that works differently. The comparison below uses the plans hotjar.com links to now.
The difference in one line
Hotjar, now Contentsquare
Shows you what happened.
Heatmaps, session replays, funnels and surveys, with AI summaries on paid plans. Someone on your team watches, reads and decides what to change.
Betterloop
Tells you what to change.
No recordings. The detectors read what the script and your other tools report, rank the problems, mostly by how many real people each one reaches, and hand you the list.

Where Hotjar is stronger
You can watch the session
When a number looks wrong, a replay shows exactly what the person did. Betterloop does not record sessions, so it cannot show you that.
Heatmaps and surveys
Click and scroll heatmaps, on-page surveys and feedback widgets. Betterloop has none of these.
Funnels and journeys
Contentsquare maps the paths to conversion and where people drop off. Betterloop records navigation, but has no funnel builder.
A much bigger free allowance
200,000 sessions a month, against Betterloop's 10,000 events. A single visit can send several events: a pageview, clicks, vitals.
A large, established platform
Many integrations, A/B testing tools, mobile app analytics, and dedicated support with SLAs on Enterprise.
Where Betterloop is different
Nothing to watch
Detectors read clicks, errors, web vitals and navigation, rank what they find, and hand you the list. No hours of recordings.
Private by default
No cookies, no session replay, no keystrokes, no form values. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control turn it off completely.
One small script
Dependency-free, with a build gate that fails if it grows past 10KB gzipped.
More than the browser
Connect GitHub, Sentry, Stripe or Plausible and their findings land in the same ranked list, next to what real users hit.
Fix it where you work
Read the list on the dashboard, in a weekly email, in Slack, or ask Claude Code or Codex what to fix next over MCP.
Details: what is and is not collected, how the detectors rank and what each connection reads.
Who should pick which
Pick Hotjar (Contentsquare) if
- You want to watch real sessions, or show recordings to your team
- You run surveys or user research
- You need heatmaps and funnels for marketing pages
- You have a lot of traffic and want to stay on a free plan
Pick Betterloop if
- You are a small team or a solo developer with no time to watch recordings
- You want a to-do list, not a dashboard to explore
- You would rather not record your visitors' sessions
- You fix things with Claude Code or Codex and want them to see production
Or run both. They answer different questions, and Betterloop is one more script tag that does not need to be the only analytics on the page.
Try it on your own site
Free, no card. Paste one script tag, connect what else you run, and read the ranked list.
